The Archdiocese of Blantyre is the Metropolitan See for the Ecclesiastical province of Blantyre in Malawi.
The Cathedral Church of the Archdiocese is the Limbe Cathedral of Our Lady.
The Archdiocese of Blantyre is 9,166 square miles (23,740 km2). Out of a total population of 4,600,000, there are 1,133,850 Catholics. There are 78 priests and 287 religious.
The current Metropolitan Archbishop of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Blantyre (since January 23, 2001) is His Excellency, The Most Reverend Archbishop Tarcisius Gervazio Ziyaye, age 60. Archbishop Ziyaye was born on May 19, 1949, in Malawi. He was ordained to the priesthood on August 14, 1977. He was named Titular Bishop of Macon and Auxiliary Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Dedza, Malawi by the late Blessed Pope John Paul II on November 26, 1991; he was consecrated and installed as Auxiliary Bishop on May 23, 1992. He was named Coadjutor Bishop of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Lilongwe, Malawi by Pope John Paul II on May 4, 1993. He succeeded as Bishop of Lilongwe on November 11, 1994. In 2000, he became the President of the Episcopal Conference of Malawi. He was named Metropolitan Archbishop of Blantyre by Pope John Paul II on January 23, 2001. He became the President of the Association of Member Episcopal Conferences in Eastern Africa (A.M.E.C.E.A.) in July 2008.
On Monday, January 25, 2010, the Holy Father, His Holiness Pope Benedict XVI, appointed The Reverend Father Montfort Stima, age 52, vicar general of the Archdiocese of Blantyre, as Titular Bishop of Puppi and as the Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese. His Excellency, The Most Reverend Bishop-elect Stima was born in Neno, Malawi on December 27, 1957, and was ordained to the priesthood on August 3, 1986. His episcopal consecration and installation will take place at a date in the near future.
